According to reliable sources RSL LifeCare has pulled out of plans to build a retirement village right near the main runway of the State Heritage-Listed Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome.
The reasons for RSL LifeCare’s decision are not yet clear but the proponent was coming under increasing pressure from the Federal government to deliver nursing home beds which were approved in 2001, 12 years ago. The delivery problem was raised again recently at Senate Estimates with Evans Head being the longest outstanding application in Australia.
Normally beds are expected to be on the ground in 2 years.
The RSL LifeCare proposal has been the subject of much public criticism from wide sectors of the community.
The estimated cost of the proposal to Richmond Valley ratepayers runs into millions of dollars.
The nursing component of the proposed development represented only 7% of the whole site and could have been built many years ago at other locations in Evans Head.
